UAE Champions Sustainability and Innovation at RAK Energy Summit

 The RAK Energy Summit 2024, held at the Al Hamra International Exhibition & Conference Center in Ras Al Khaimah, underscored the UAE's unwavering commitment to sustainability and its vision for a net-zero future. Over two days, leading global and regional experts, decision-makers, and industry leaders gathered to discuss and showcase cutting-edge solutions for the energy transition, reinforcing the UAE's leadership in sustainable development.

Driving the Future of Energy

Eng. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted the nation’s proactive approach to sustainability. He stated:

“The UAE is dedicated to leveraging advanced technologies and fostering international collaboration to address energy and water challenges. These efforts are pivotal for achieving the UAE’s ambitious energy objectives.”

The summit, inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, provided a platform to explore strategies and best practices in renewable energy, decarbonization, and energy efficiency.

Showcasing Innovations and Collaborations

Key speakers and contributors brought unique perspectives to the event, including:

  • Yousif Al Ali, CEO of Etihad Water and Electricity, who unveiled transformative projects like the Naqa’a RO Plant and Distributed Solar Systems.
  • Ahmed Ali Al-Ebrahim, CEO of the GCC Interconnection Authority, discussing regional grid integration.
  • Lucas Boehlé from the International Energy Agency, presenting global trends in energy efficiency.
  • Anne Dekeukelaere, from Switzerland’s CWSC, focusing on decarbonizing the cement industry.

The UAE’s own initiatives took center stage, with Ras Al Khaimah Municipality unveiling a revamped energy strategy emphasizing decarbonization and environmental protection.

Recognizing Excellence

The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure announced the winners of the 8th UAE Energy Management Awards, celebrating innovation in energy management.

  • First Place: Abu Dhabi Distribution Company.
  • Second Place: ENOC Corporate Real Estate.
  • Third Place: Al Futtaim Real Estate.

Milestones in Sustainability

The summit marked the launch of the National Industry Sustainability Initiative, a partnership between the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) and the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT). The centerpiece of this initiative was the unveiling of the UAE Industry Registry Platform, designed to support energy management regulations across industrial facilities.

Stakeholders like Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and companies such as Schneider Electric and EDF Group contributed to a comprehensive agenda, touching on sustainability in energy-intensive sectors and hospitality.

Participants like Dharmesh Sawant, General Manager at Hisense HVAC, emphasized sustainability as a driver of innovation, while Simon Huber, Managing Director of Innovia Films, championed sustainable materials to reduce carbon footprints.

As the UAE prepares to host COP28 and continues its leadership in climate action, the RAK Energy Summit exemplified the country’s dedication to advancing sustainable energy practices.
