Charles Leclerc Leads Practice One at Abu Dhabi GP, but Ferrari Faces Constructors' Title Setback
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix got off to an intriguing start as Charles Leclerc topped the time charts in the first practice session, setting the fastest lap of 1:24.321. However, Ferrari’s hopes of clinching the Constructors’ Championship suffered an immediate blow when it was confirmed that Leclerc would face a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday's race due to a pre-session battery change.
Ferrari’s Uphill Battle in the Constructors’ Championship
Ferrari entered the 2024 F1 season finale trailing McLaren by 21 points in the Constructors’ Championship. To have any realistic chance of claiming their first title since 2008, Ferrari needs a near-perfect race weekend, ideally with a one-two finish. Leclerc’s grid penalty complicates this scenario, as it places significant pressure on the Scuderia to deliver flawless qualifying and race strategies.
Leclerc’s performance in Practice One was a small consolation for Ferrari. The Monegasque driver outpaced McLaren’s Lando Norris, who finished just two-tenths of a second behind, with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and George Russell taking third and fourth places, respectively.
Hamilton’s Farewell to Mercedes
This weekend marks the end of an era for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who will leave Mercedes after a 12-year partnership. Hamilton faced a minor stewards' investigation during the session for allegedly impeding Norris at the final corner. However, the stewards ruled the incident a “misunderstanding” and took no further action.
A Blend of Regulars and Rookies
The first practice session saw a mix of regular drivers and rookies as six teams fulfilled their FIA-mandated requirement to give rookie drivers two P1 sessions during the season. Among the debutants was Arthur Leclerc, Charles Leclerc's younger brother and a development driver for Ferrari. Arthur finished 18th in his maiden session, standing in for Carlos Sainz.
Felipe Drugovich, Aston Martin’s reserve driver, was the fastest among the rookies, securing ninth place. Franco Colapinto impressed for Williams by finishing seventh but, like teammate Alex Albon, will face a five-place grid penalty for exceeding gearbox usage limits.
Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez in the Spotlight
Nico Hulkenberg showcased strong form for Haas, finishing sixth in what could be his final race with the team. Meanwhile, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who faces mounting speculation about his future with the team, finished 10th.
Key Challenges of Abu Dhabi’s P1
The first practice session at the Yas Marina Circuit is traditionally unrepresentative of the weekend’s racing conditions. Taking place in the afternoon heat, P1 offers little insight into the performance dynamics expected in the cooler evening conditions of qualifying and the race, both held under floodlights.
Teams used this session primarily for data gathering and to meet their rookie participation obligations. This practical but non-representative approach ensured a wide mix of lap times and performance levels.
Ferrari’s Last-Ditch Effort
Despite Leclerc’s encouraging pace in Practice One, Ferrari’s path to victory in the Constructors’ Championship appears steep. The team must overcome not just the grid penalty but also McLaren’s consistent form and 21-point advantage. With Carlos Sainz returning for Practice Two and a race weekend full of challenges ahead, Ferrari will need to pull off an extraordinary performance to rewrite the championship narrative.
Looking Ahead to the Race Weekend
As the 2024 F1 season reaches its thrilling conclusion, all eyes will be on Ferrari’s strategies, McLaren’s consistency, and the individual performances of drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix promises a fitting finale to a season filled with drama, surprises, and unforgettable moments.
