UAE Recognized for Leadership in Gender Balance and Women’s Empowerment

 The United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem, has praised the UAE for its exceptional commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. Speaking at the conclusion of her official visit to the UAE, Alsalem highlighted the country’s remarkable progress in promoting gender balance across all sectors and protecting the rights of women and girls.





A National Priority Backed by Leadership

Alsalem emphasized that gender balance is a top priority for the UAE, supported by its leadership, government, and society. "This steadfast approach is reflected in the UAE’s significant milestones in women’s empowerment," she stated, noting the country’s comprehensive policies and programs aimed at fostering equality and safeguarding women and girls from violence.

Milestones in Gender Equality

The UAE’s achievements in advancing women’s rights have garnered global recognition. Key highlights include:

  • 7th globally and 1st regionally on the United Nations Gender Equality Index for 2024.
  • An 82.5 out of 100 score from the World Bank in 2023 for women’s rights.

Alsalem commended the UAE’s constitutional framework, which guarantees equality, social justice, and equal opportunities for all. She praised the UAE’s initiatives to enhance gender balance and strengthen family values, emphasizing their role in building a resilient and inclusive society.

Empowering Women in Politics and Society

The UAE has made significant strides in empowering women politically and socially. Achievements include:

  • Increasing women’s representation in the Federal National Council to 50%.
  • Establishing the UAE Gender Balance Council to promote gender equality across all sectors.
  • Supporting women and girls through institutions like the General Women’s Union and the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood.

Alsalem also highlighted the Federal Law on Child Rights (Wadeema) as a positive framework for protecting children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

A Global Advocate for Women, Peace, and Security

On the global stage, the UAE has demonstrated leadership in advancing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. Alsalem applauded the launch of the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Women Peace and Security Initiative in 2019, which supports United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.

A Model for Other Nations

Reflecting on her visit, Alsalem described her experience in the UAE as one of the most organized and cooperative in her role. She praised the nation’s progress in fulfilling its international commitments to women’s rights, calling it a model for other countries seeking to advance gender equality.
