UAE Pioneers 24/7 Renewable Energy with Groundbreaking Solar-Battery Project

 The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has achieved a historic milestone by launching the world’s first 24-hour gigascale renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi. This innovative initiative, which integrates solar power and battery energy storage, positions the UAE as a global leader in clean energy technology and sustainable development.



The project features a 5.2-gigawatt (GW) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant paired with a 19-gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), making it the largest facility of its kind worldwide. This revolutionary setup will deliver 1 GW of continuous, baseload power daily, ensuring a reliable supply of renewable energy around the clock.

Overcoming the Intermittency Barrier
One of the most significant challenges in renewable energy has been the inability to deliver uninterrupted power. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, celebrated the project as a game-changer:
“Thanks to the visionary leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, we have overcome the challenge of renewable energy intermittency. This project transforms renewable energy into a dependable, baseload power source, delivering 1 GW daily and setting a global precedent for clean energy deployment.”

The BESS, with its 19 GWh storage capacity, ensures the seamless integration of solar energy into the grid, enhancing system reliability and stability. This innovation supports the UAE’s ambitions to scale up its clean energy portfolio and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Driving Economic Growth and Innovation
Developed by Masdar, the UAE’s flagship renewable energy company, this record-breaking project is set to create 10,000 new jobs, fostering innovation and economic growth. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, expressed pride in the initiative:
“This is our most ambitious project to date, combining 5.2 GW of solar PV with 19 GWh of battery storage. It exemplifies our commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and enhancing the UAE’s global leadership in renewable energy innovation.”
