UAE’s Humanitarian Diplomacy: 50 Prisoners of War Exchanged Between Russia and Ukraine

 In a significant diplomatic achievement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) successfully mediated the release of 50 prisoners of war (POWs) between Russia and Ukraine on Wednesday. This exchange, involving 25 captives from each side, highlights the UAE’s commitment to fostering dialogue and humanitarian efforts amidst the ongoing conflict.

This marks the 11th POW exchange facilitated by the UAE since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in early 2022. Over 2,500 individuals have been freed through the UAE’s mediation efforts, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted global peacebroker.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised both Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation and reaffirmed the nation's dedication to supporting peaceful resolutions. In a statement released by state news agency WAM, the ministry emphasized the UAE’s commitment to humanitarian principles and its role in promoting global stability.

President Zelenskyy’s Acknowledgment

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed heartfelt gratitude to the UAE for its instrumental role in securing the release of 25 Ukrainians. The group includes both military personnel and civilians, many of whom sustained severe injuries or suffer from illnesses.

“Today, 25 more of our people are returning home to Ukraine,” President Zelenskyy shared on social media platform X. “Among them are defenders of Mariupol, Azovstal, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. Each will receive the necessary medical care they need.”

He further emphasized Ukraine’s unwavering commitment to bringing all of its citizens back home and thanked the UAE for making this critical humanitarian initiative possible.
