WHAT DINA THINKS: 'COP28 had to be a COP of action, COP for all'

Hi expats! The recently concluded 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) marked a historic milestone in global efforts to combat climate change. Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and COP28 President, shared insights into the significant role played by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in achieving unprecedented outcomes during this momentous event.

Dr. Al Jaber began by praising the UAE's visionary leaders, including President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Their unflinching support was critical to the success of COP28, demonstrating the UAE's commitment to global climate action.

Dr. Al Jaber credited Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikha Maryam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan with monitoring the preparations for COP28. The media committee, directed by Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was instrumental in demonstrating the UAE's leadership in sustainable development.

COP28 saw new achievements, including the 'UAE Consensus', which brought together 198 Parties. The comprehensive action agenda set a global goal of tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the importance of raising more than $85 billion for climate action, including the establishment of ALTÉRRA, a $25 billion investment vehicle for climate projects.

Dr. Al Jaber stressed the significance of a balanced transition when it comes to oil and gas emissions. He called for significant investments in R&D to improve energy efficiency and minimize emissions throughout the manufacturing and consumption processes. Carbon capture and storage technologies have been identified as critical for reducing the carbon footprint of problematic industries such as cement, aluminium, and steel production.

Dr. Al Jaber saw climate change as a challenge and an opportunity. He emphasized that tackling this crisis will necessitate annual funding ranging from $4 trillion to $5 trillion. The COP28 action plan stressed the importance of international financial institutions in assisting developing countries by establishing transparent and monitored climate policies.

COP28's success was ascribed to its inclusive approach, which made it the most well-attended COP in history. Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders, including international leaders, local leaders, church leaders, youth, Indigenous Peoples, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and CEOs. Meaningful youth participation culminated in the first Youth Global Stocktake, which demonstrated the value of every voice in determining climate action.

I think that the achievements of COP28, guided by the UAE's leadership and vision, have established a new norm for global climate conferences. As the globe grapples with the urgent issue of climate change, the UAE's commitment, creativity, and inclusive approach provide a beacon of hope for a sustainable and resilient future. The legacy of COP28 will definitely inspire future collaborative efforts toward a greener, more sustainable earth.
