WHAT DINA THINKS: How UAE Navigates Global Instability with Economic Power and Strategic Diplomacy

Hi expats! Recently, in an article published about the country, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was described as a "bridge builder punching above its weight", further describing the value of fostering connections and reconciliation stands out as paramount. This was particularly evident in 2023, especially in the Middle East, where longstanding tensions were exacerbated by a tragic conflict in the Levant.

With a population of 9.3 million and an economy ranking 31st globally, the UAE leverages its economic prosperity to become a key player on the international stage. Let's explore the aspects of diplomatic initiatives undertaken by the UAE, from the Abraham Accords to UN Security Council leadership, and its aim for climate action and global engagement.

1. Economic Powerhouse

The UAE's economic strength, reflected in its 31st global ranking in terms of GDP, is important as shapes its diplomatic future. The country's wealth affords it a unique position, allowing it to exert influence and play an essential role in global problem-solving.

2. The Abraham Accords

A moment in the UAE's diplomatic history was the signing of the Abraham Accords with Israel. Going beyond mere normalization, this historic agreement positioned the UAE as a mediator in the volatile Middle East. Amid the Gaza war, the UAE showed a dedication to peace and humanitarian aid, illustrating its proactive stance in resolving conflicts.

3. UN Security Council Leadership

The UAE's involvement in the UN Security Council really demonstrated its skill in playing its part in international stability. As a non-permanent member, the country played an important role in leading global calls for aid to Gaza. The proposal of Resolution 2720 underscored the UAE's influence, emphasizing its commitment to being a responsible and proactive participant in global governance.

4. Field Hospital in Gaza

In addition to diplomatic efforts, the UAE took steps to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. By establishing a field hospital, the country leveraged its connections with various stakeholders to make a positive impact on the ground. Another effort done by the UAE is the program called 'Tarahum for Gaza' which garnered donations from UAE residents to be sent to Gazans. The most notable effort by the UAE which is still ongoing is the "Gallant Knight 3" operation by President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, the latest batch being 29 trucks loaded with relief and medical supplies.

5. Climate Leadership and Global South Engagement

The hosting of COP28 in Dubai showcased how the UAE wants to address climate change, a notable feat for a major oil exporter. Beyond hosting, the UAE invested $4.5 billion in renewable energy projects in Africa, further showing its dedication to sustainable development and its expanding focus on Asian investments.

6. BRICS+ Membership

Joining the BRICS+ club alongside Saudi Arabia in January marked a significant stride for the UAE. This move emphasizes the country's commitment to being an influential voice in the Global South. It also shows its desire to engage with both Eastern and Western nations and solidify its status as an important figure in shaping global agendas. BRICS was originally an alliance between Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

7. Non-Partisan Moderation

In an era marked by increasing partisanship, the UAE's ability to maintain a voice of moderation is proof to its diplomatic wisdom. This quality positions the country as a valuable asset for global diplomacy, promising a role as a stabilizing force in the complex geopolitical landscape of the years and decades to come.

I think that the UAE is continuing to emerge as a figure of hope and a bridge-builder in a world developed with division. From mediating conflicts and addressing humanitarian crises to leading on climate action and engaging with the Global South, the UAE's comprehensive approach positions it as an important player in shaping a more peaceful and cooperative global future, the way we all want it to be!
