WHAT DINA THINKS: UAE's Floating Hospital Brings Joy and Relief to Gaza's Children with Weekly Activities

The UAE's floating hospital, currently docked in the city of Al Arish in northern Egypt, recently organized a day of fun activities for the children of Gaza. This initiative was aimed at improving the psychological and social well-being of these young individuals through arts and entertainment, creating a safe space for them to express themselves amidst the ongoing conflict. According to state news agency WAM, Mona Talib Ahmed, a nurse at the hospital, highlighted that activities such as drawing, henna, and Quran-based competitions were particularly effective in easing the children's distress caused by the Israeli strikes and ground offensive in the Palestinian enclave.

The hospital staff have committed to hosting weekly events to keep the children entertained and provide them with a sense of normalcy. The 100-bed floating hospital, part of the UAE's Gallant Knight 3 campaign, is equipped with a range of medical facilities including operating theatres, intensive care units, radiology facilities, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and medical warehouses. Additionally, the ship is equipped with an evacuation aircraft, a boat, and fully equipped ambulances to ensure comprehensive medical support for patients. These facilities highlight the UAE's dedication to providing a lifeline to the people of Gaza during these challenging times.

The psychological impact on the children of Gaza has been profound, with the UN children's fund reporting stress and pressure levels higher than most other conflicts. Adele Khodr, UNICEF Middle East and North Africa regional director, emphasized the intensity and frequency of mental stress experienced by children in Gaza, describing it as unprecedented. Many children have been forced to constantly move to avoid bombings, perpetuating a cycle of violence and fear. Additionally, the war has severely impacted education, with over 625,000 students lacking access to educational facilities due to systematic destruction, a crisis referred to as "scholasticide" by UN experts.
